T relleborg Sealing Solutions has introduced a four day week for all employees at the O-ring plant in Malta.
The reduced working arrangements were announced two days after the Maltese government announced the introduction of new utility tariffs. One of the Trelleborg directors made it clear in a Federation of Industry press conference that these exorbitant rates spell 'disaster' for anyone investing in Malta.
Trelleborg blamed the current economic slowdown and a drop in consumer confidence. The company, formerly Dowty, has been operating in Malta for almost 50 years, and employs almost 700 workers, making it one of the largest private employers in Malta. A statement indicated that the company has been sensing the pangs of a slowdown for months. The company explained it has been experiencing 'a continuing drop in the order book and over the past months has taken various measures to mitigate this situation.' Martin Hignett, managing director of Trelleborg, had warned that 'anybody thinking of expansion plans in Malta will find it very difficult, if not impossible, to justify making such an investment when considering initiatives like this from the government.'
