✦ Synopsis


The results of a numerical study of the viscous oscillating ¯ow around a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 200 and Keulegan±Carpenter number 20 are presented. The ®nite element method was used for the solution of the Navier±Stokes equations, in the formulation where the streamfunction and the vorticity are the ®eld variables. The computation revealed a complicated ¯ow pattern at which the ¯ow is not periodic but switches between dierent modes at various oscillation cycles. The vortex shedding patterns occurring at dierent cycles were identi®ed by means of numerical ¯ow visualization. The traces of the hydrodynamic forces were derived from the solution, and the hydrodynamic coecients of the in-line force were evaluated. # 1998
