Abstract

A Lagrangian finite element algorithm is described for solving two‐dimensional, time‐dependent free surface flows, in which moving contact lines are simulated by allowing local slip and the use of a β€˜Tanner Law’. The method is implemented using structured meshes, which are locally refined in the contact line regions, and periodic remeshing to control element distortion. The benchmark problem of capillary motion between parallel horizontal plates is solved to illustrate the accuracy of the method and its applicability to flows of engineering relevance. The dynamic response of submarine pipelines to earthquake-generated vertical seabed motions is examined with the aid of a finite element model. A relaxation algorithm is adopted in order to overcome the problem of unknown dynamic seabed reaction forces. Rotational rigidity is assumed at the boundary
