โฆ Synopsis
The paper describes the development and application of a twodimensional breadth averaged mathematical model to predict the tide-induced vertical current and salinity structure in deep estuarine and coastal waters. With the recent boom in salmon fish farming in Scottish lochs, and the need to control and manage the nitrogen levels in such lochs to maintain water quality standards, particular emphasis has been placed on applying the model to Loch Eil in Scotland. The model includes the solution of the breadth averaged conservation equations of mass, momentum and solute transport, with particular emphasis being placed in the momentum equation on the inclusion and representation of the non-linear advective accelerations and the turbulent mixing process. Results from the model were compared with analytical solutions for two idealised flow fields, with good agreement being obtained for both studies. Simulations of tide-and wind-induced vertical circulation in Loch Eil were also undertaken, with the results obtained highlighting some interesting current and salinity patterns.
