Nucleation catalysis was investigated by measuring the characteristic supercooling of bulk liquid tin when in contact with a variety of gross catalytic substrates. Where definite catalysis due to the presence of an intentional substrate occurred. reproducible supercooling of the liquid tin was always observed. On the basis of equations derived from heterogeneous nucleation theory, the equilibrium contact-angle of solid tin on various substrates and the difference in surface energy between the crystalline tin-tosubstrate interface and the liquid tin-to-substrate were calculated. Some evidence of crystallographic misfit influencing nucleation catalysis was observed; however. attempts to compare substrates of different chemical species on this basis showed that misfit effects tend t,o be masked by other factors.

DE GERMINATION DANS L'ETAIN LIQUIDE SURFONDU Les auteurs ont Btudie la catalyse de germination en mesurant la surfusion caracteristique d'une masse d'etain liquide au contact de differents substrats catalytiques bruts. Wenn die Anwesenheit einer bestimmten Substanz deutliche Katalyse hervorrief, war die Unterktihlung des fliissigen Zinns immer reproduzierbar. Mit Hilfe der Theorie der heterogenen Keimbildung wurden sowohl die Gleich-gewichtsRandwinke1 van festem Zinn auf verschiedenen Substanzen als such die Differenzen der Oberflachenenergien der Substanzen gegen kristallines bzw. fltissiges Zinn berechnet.
