✦ Synopsis
A nuclear-spin and inversion state-selected NH, beam is produced by coupling molecular beam electnc deflection techniques with the extreme rotational cooling of a pulsed supersonic expansion. Two-photon resonant three-photon ionization is used to probe the molecular beam quantum state distribution.
The resulting beam is predominantly ( > 95%) in a single quantum state (neglecting hyperfine structure), namely JK = l,, m the upper inversion state with para nuclear spin symmetry.
