β¦ Synopsis
The science of tribology deals with the relative movement of different machine components, friction and wear phenomena and their dependence upon lubrication. A review of fundamental aspects of the above mentioned processes is presented in the first part of the paper. All nuclear based methods for wear and corrosion determination that are briefly presented differ mainly with respect to the mode of introduction of the radioactive label into the machine part of interest. Two of them--the nuclear reaction based method using neutron irradiation and the thin-layer activation by accelerated charged particles--are given special consideration because of their large number of applications worldwide. Some dedicated measuring methods together with illustrative examples of wear and corrosion determination experiments are presented as well.
