✦ Synopsis

We review the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov mass models of the Brussels-Montreal group and compare their suitability for astrophysical purposes with three other modern mass formulas: the FRDM of MΓΆller et al., the KUTY model of Koura et al., and the Duflo-Zuker 1995 model. In addition to considering the quality of their respective fits to the data of the atomic mass evaluation of December 2003, we also compare their extrapolations out towards the neutron drip line. The implications for fission barriers and the role of the equation of state of neutron matter are both discussed.

A recoil mass separator was constructed for experiments of nuclear astrophysics using radioactive nuclear beams, and its performance was tested. The observed beam suppression factor around M ∼ 20 was 10 -4 when the system was tuned for M = 1 heavier ions than beam ions. With a charge state breeding

Gamma-ray astronomy presents an extraordinary scientific potential for the study of the most powerful sources and the most violent events in the Universe. In order to take full advantage of this potential, the next generation of instrumentation for this domain will have to achieve an improvement in
