✦ Synopsis


Abstmct--A tritactic polymer, polymethylsorbate (PMS), has been studied by investigation of NMR line-width and second moment at various temperatures. The NMR absorption signal consists of two main components over the range -196 ~ to 115 Β°. Activation energies of molecular motions were obtained from the narrowing of the lines.

A parallel NMR investigation on polysodiumsorbate indicated that in PMS the ester methyl groups are in effective motion below liquid nitrogen temperature, while the motions of the main chain methyl groups are activated above this temperature. The fact that segmental motions occur only at relatively high temperature seems to be due to a chain stiffness associated with the particular tritactic structure of PMS.
