โฆ Synopsis
U S-based Modine Manufacturing Co, a leading designer and developer of heating and cooling solutions, has introduced a fuel cell product that will reduce emissions and cut costs for 'over-the-road' truck drivers. This new advanced idle reduction system (idleoff) incorporates fuel cells, and uses carbon dioxide as a refrigerant for cooling. This new idle-off system can be used for both cooling and heating the sleeper cabin in a heavy-duty truck.
The new CO 2 air-conditioning and heating system was designed by Modine at its R&D facility in Wisconsin. The unique properties of CO 2 make it advantageous for both cooling and heating a vehicle; using a CO 2 heat pump to heat the cabin in cold weather is more energy-efficient than using conventional heating products.
Modine sourced the hydrogen PEM fuel cell power pack from Canadian-based General Hydrogen Corporation. It was specifically designed for a truck auxiliary power unit application to produce electrical energy continuously for more than 10 h. The thermal management system was designed and built by Modine's fuel cell products group.
