The company also incurred a pre-tax loss of $26 M mainly as a result of the amended cost projection for the environmental remediation of its former vermiculite mine in Montana, and a $12 M loss for the settlement of a tax dispute in the USA. On a comparable basis, Grace posted net income, not including special items, of $40.3 M in 3Q 2006, an increase of 32.6% year-on-year. Grace Davison's operating income was 23.9% higher in 3Q 2006 at $45.6 M on sales up 17.2% to $396.5 M. The results were attributed to higher product prices and increasing refining catalyst demand.
