LS9 to produce biodiesel in Florida

LS9, a renewable petroleum company, will revamp an existing fermentation plant in Okeechobee, FL, to allow production of its UltraClean Diesel and chemicals, initially at a demonstration scale, for ramp up to commercial scale. The plant, which the company recently secured, is already fitted with large, commercial-scale equipment. The demonstration unit will be based on LS9's proprietary one-step fermentation process to produce 50,000-10,000 gallons of renewable transport fuel by end-2010. Sugarcane syrup from local suppliers will initially be used as feedstock for the plant, although other feedstocks such as agricultural waste and wood chips will also be tested. Scale up to commercial production will start following completion of testing and demonstrations. The project is expected to create 30-50 jobs in the construction phase and 15-20 jobs in operation. LS9 runs a pilot-scale unit in San Francisco, CA, with a 1000 litre fermenter.
