"November", ein Frühwerk Flauberts, kreist um den Eros als magisch-betäubende Kraft. Der damals einundzwanzigjährige Autor erzählt in halb träumerisch-romantischer, halb realistischer Perspektive vom erwachenden Liebesverlangen eines Jugendlichen. Die Liebe zur unerreichbaren Frau ergießt sich in einer phantasierenden, bilderreichen Sprache, die alles, Naturerlebnisse und überschwängliche Liebe, in einem breiten reißenden Strom vereint.
Dieses Jugendwerk Flauberts ist ein kostbares Zeugnis für seine anarchisch-stürmische Phase des damals 21jährigen Autors. Bereits hier geht es, wie später in der "Education sentimentale", um eine Schule der Gefühle und der sinnlichen Liebe, und darum wohl hat Flaubert dieses romantisch stürmische Jugendwerk auch in seinen späten Jahren gelten lassen. Noch heute eröffnet es einen ungewöhnlichen Zugang zu seinem Werk
