✦ Synopsis

Abstract

In this Letter a novel type of waveguide based on a photonic crystal and implemented in microwave printed‐circuit technology is proposed. The novel waveguide is obtained by introducing a line defect in a 2D photonic crystal placed inside a parallel‐plate waveguide. The resulting structure supports guided modes that propagate along the line defect. Simulation and measurement results confirming the existence of a low‐loss waveguiding band are presented. The novel type of planar waveguide has a quasi‐TEM fundamental mode and is compatible with the widely employed microstrip technology, but because of its unique configuration it does not suffer from some problems common to planar technologies like radiation losses or surface‐wave mode excitation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work presents a novel computer-aided design (CAD) tool for the design of tapered leaky-wave antennas (LWAs) in hybrid waveguide printed-circuit technology. The software package is composed of several tools, which are connected together to provide a semi-automated step-by-step design procedure.
