In contrast to the extensive recent1 work on natural products of gorgonians (order Gorgonacea) and soft corals (order Alcyonacea), members of the closely related sea pens (order Pennatulacea)
have not been investigated. We now wish to report the isolation of novel steroids, possessing unusual side chain functionality and stereochemistry, from the sea pen Ptilosarcus gurneyi 2,3 Gray.
