β¦ Synopsis
Avista Labs currently markets its three Independence fuel cell products for commercial and industrial backup power solutions in the 50 We to 5 kWe range. Its patented Modular Cartridge Technologyβ’ offers the ability to perform maintenance while the system continues to operate, increasing the system's reliability.
Meanwhile, Avista Labs has laid off nine of its 45 employees as it searches for an investor, according to the Spokesman Review newspaper in Spokane, with the company shifting its focus to manufacturing and sales. Last year the company laid off nearly half of its workforce, including six executives. Parent company Avista Corporation has said it wants to sell 80% of the fuel cell developer by the end of June, most likely to venture capitalists, and has been talking with two potential investors. Although it anticipates selling $1.6m worth of fuel cells this year, the company does not expect to turn a profit until 2005.
