In many of the recent popular works on astronomy I have noticed that frequent references are made to the fact that muropean astronomers have shown that the earth passed through or very near the tail of the areal comet of 1861. As I was not in communication with the European scientific journals at th

✦ Synopsis
the ''absolute'' magnitude, H 0 , for a comet is not well defined. Formally it is the observed magnitude the comet would have if placed at a distance A statistical investigation of the photometric indices of periof 1 AU from both the Sun and the Earth, as it is for the atmosphereless odic comets shows a mean of about 7.4 ( Ȃ 7.6), a slight body. Unlike that case, however, it probably has very little to do with variation with heliocentric distance and a perihelion asymmetry the size and albedo of the object. Of historical importance is the absolute in the distribution.
