Abstract
The convergence necessary to produce the appropriate wind field in a deepening depression is compared with the divergence necessary to produce the hydrostatic fall of pressure and it is shown that the latter is comparatively insignificant. The inward and outward movement of air associated with the adjustment of wind to gradient is considerable and it is suggested that accurate streamline analysis of the winds might lead to the detection of areas in which development is taking place.
