M-It is shown that a kinetic expression of the form i = A exp [(BE -yE')/RTl can be derived from the transition-state theory, if the energy stored in the dielectric is taken into account. This relationship involves a term with the square of the field E (or the po$ential) in the exponent. The meaning of the factor y is discussed. Its magnitude is estimated and compared with values obtained experimentally by Young in the anodic oxidation of tantalum.
