✦ Synopsis

The North-Central and South-Central Sections of the Geological Society of America met in a combined meeting April 27-28, 1995 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Rolfe D. Mandel and Vance T. Holliday organized a symposium for the Archaeological Geology Division, entitled "Geoarchaeological Research in Fluvial and Eolian Depositional Environments." The intent of the symposium was to compare and contrast site forming processes in fluvial and eolian environments in the North American Great Plains.

M. J. Guccione began the symposium with the paper "Site Preservation Potential Along an Active Meandering and Avulsing Stream, The Red River, Southwestern Arkansas.'' Guccione showed that relatively young sites will be preserved within the modern Red River meander belt, with preservation of older sites occurring in areas where avulsions terminated channel migration. L. C. Nordt followed with "Late Quaternary Landscape Evolution and Geoarchaeology of a Small Limestone Drainage Basin, Central Texas." This paper showed that in high-energy fluvial and alluvial fan depositional environments site preservation potentials are considerably lower than along major tributaries in the region. P. Goldberg then presented "Site Forming Processes
