✦ Synopsis
An outline is given of a constructed model rotor and the preliminary experimental results are described. The model rotor was excited up to a rated current of 2000 A without training. The normal zone propagating velocities were measured in a rotating cryostat and were also calculated using the estimated heat transfer coefficients. By considering the change in the voltage drops after the normal transition, minimum burn-out currents were found. If the operating current is smaller than this current, the conductor will not burn out even after the normal transition. This minimum burn-out current could be used as a safety current criterion.
