It has been proposed that some of the diffuse interstellar absorption bands which have puzzled astronomers for several decades may be assigned to transitions in vibrationally excited H 2 molecules. These molecules would arise in circumstellar environments where stellar Lyman-cx photons create a popu

✦ Synopsis
All (twelve) optical diffuse interstellar absorption bands appearing in the interval 768.0-788.0 nm are assigned on the basis of a nonlinear effect: Lyman-alpha-driven, resonantly enhanced two-photon absorption by hydrogen molecules located near H II regions of young, hot stars.
