Nonlinearity, inherent in physical systems, can be simulated using elementary catastrophe theory. In this paper, we present a general framework for the application of this theory to environmental systems and demonstrate its practicality in a series of quantitative models consisting of the eutrophication of small lakes, rainfall infiltration process, geothermal simulation and the multispecies/multiphase flow in oil reservoir.
