โœฆ Synopsis

T h e nonlinear intial b o u n d a r y value problem describing the r e l a x a t i o n of a q u a s i -n e u t r a l discharge in a gas flow w i t h coplanar, h e a t e d a n d n o n h e a t e d electrodes of finite extension is f o r m u l a t e d in t h e diffusion a p p r o x i m a t i o n . R e l a x a t i o n occurs from an initial b r e a k d o w n to a s t e a d y -s t a t e or zero discharge in a w e a k electric field. A nonlinear t r a n s f o r m a t i o n is applied to get a n e q u i v a l e n t n o n l i n e a r problem, where n o n l i n e a r i t y is t r e a t e d as a small p e r t u r b a t i o n . An analytic solution is obtained a n d criterions for existence a n d s u s t a i n m e n t of a s t e a d y -s t a t e discharge against p l a s m a losses due to convection, diffusion a n d r e c o m b i n a t i o n is discussed. Some numerical results are exhibited.

The corona ignition voltage of an electrical discharge in air of atmospheric pressure depends on the presence of (moisture) particles, which may increase the corona losses. A relation between the corona ignition voltage and the particle size when tested shows unexpected results. With the corona igni
