β¦ Synopsis
Nonplanar triptycene derivatives are used for the first time as active subunits for second-harmonic generation. The quadratic hyperpolarizabihty coefficient ,V of 2nitrotriptycene is measured in solution by use of the electric-field-induced second-harmonic gcncration (EFISH) tcchniquc. Its magnitude is almost five times larger than that for nitrobenzene. This enhancement is probably linked to the sharp increase of the extinction coefficients of the low-energy absorption bands when going from nitrobenzene to 2-nitrotriptycene.

procedures that have been used to measure optical nonlinearities for these complexes are discussed. Attempts to "switch" optical nonlinearities of acetylide or vinylidene complexes are summarized.
