β¦ Synopsis
The effect of second-and third-order nonlinearities on transverse shear waves in an elastic medium is examined. It is found that waveform distortion and shock development occur on a length scale which is an order of magnitude greater than for longitudinal waves. Explicit solutions for modulated traveling waves are obtained.

Interaction of longitudinal waves in an elastic medium with inhomogeneous plane prestrain is investigated theoretically. Simultaneous propagation of two waves excited by tractions on opposite boundaries of the medium (structural element) is considered. An analytical solution to the one-dimensional p
