✦ Synopsis

have not received as much attention as they deserve ( 2 ) , Bistability and oscillations have been studied for a C, lmemalthough it is obvious that detailed studies on these are bound brane I CI system, where CI and CZ represent the concentrations to enhance our of exotic nonlinear phenomena of dilute and concentrated solutions of NaCIIKCI. In this context in nonreacting systems including membrane processes. (i) hydrodynamic permeability, (ii) electroosmotic permeability, (iii) streaming current, and (iv) diffusion current (current due to

In the case of bistability in electrokinetic phenomena, deconcentration difference on the two sides of the membrane) have pendence lhe transmembrane cumen t o n the applied Potenbeen measured to test the assum~tions of existine theories. &ta-tial difference is investigated when the pressure difference bility data do not support the existing theories. The ratio of the slopes does not correspond to CI/C2 as predicted by the theory of Kobatake el a/. A semiempirical correlation has been proposed for the interpretation of data. Data on electrokinetic oscillations in (i) a Pyrex memhranc-aqucouselectrolytesystem and (ii)a Millipore lilter-aqueous electrolyte system have been reported in order to test certain features of the existing theories. The resulls show that the time period depends on the gcomelrical factors describing the system and is independent of the current strength, which is in conformity with the theory of Teorell et a/. as well as that of Meares et a/. It has been shown that previous theory also leads to an equation of the Van der Pol type. An attempt has been made to examine the correlation between bistability and oscillations. It is found that bistability can occur when electroosmotic permeability is a function of potential difference and conductance is a function of volume flux. On the other hand, oscillations can occur when co~~ductance is a function of volume flux, provided certain dynamic conditions are satisfied. o iwr nca<~cmie prem. ~nc.

A large flexible array of nonlinear service processing elements, which capture the functional characteristics of the signalling mechanisms of switching nodes in asynchronous heterogeneous networks (e.g. broadband ISDN), has been designed and implemented. The array is based on field programmable gate
