The nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE) was measured in two binary systems near the critical point. The effect is independent of specific dipole-dipole interactions in contrast with previous conceptions. Its singular part is proportional to (T -~J-"\* in agreement with Snider's theory as applied to ND

β¦ Synopsis
The nonlinear dielectric effect in ethanol + dodecane critical mixture (T, = 13.6 2 O.O3"C, x, = 0.68 rt 0.005 mole fraction of EtOH) as a function of temperature and concentration was investigated. The strong increase of A&/E* in the vicinity of the critical solution point was found. The critical anomaly was expressed by the power law equation: As/E' = (As/E'), + We and the obtained critical exponent value 0 was 0.57 2 0.07.
