Temperate estuaries are indispensable as refuelling areas for long-distance shorebirds, where they depend on intertidal benthic fauna, such as bivalves, as food source. Bivalve recruitment is thought to be, at least partly, top-down regulated by epibenthic predators (the shrimp Crangon crangon and t
