Nonisothermal flow of a variable-viscosity Newtonian fluid between parallel plates is analyzed to study the effect of heat transfer and viscosity effect on the pumping capacity of the device. Results indicaie that the pumping capacity is greatly reduced in the entrance regions of a pumping device such as a single screw extruder or c a l e d u . This reduction in pumping capacity can cause severe surging effects

in the device, for the pumping capacity is enhanced by the thermal effect in the exit region.
