✦ Synopsis
By comparing the adsorption of cyclic CH2N2 on Cu ( 110) and Pd ( 110) we demonstrate a case in which the surface decomposition chemistry is consistent with anti-synergistic x-o chemisorption bonding. XPS and TPD results show that selective NN bond scission occurs on Cu( 110) whereas an additional decomposition channel, resulting from primary CN bond scission, takes place on Pd( 110). The observed metal specific chemistry is interpreted in terms of the balance of donation and backdonation which results from the match between the frontier orbitals of diazirine and the valence band structure of the two metals.
