✦ Synopsis
The phosphorescence quantum yield ofbenzaldehyde vapour has been measured as a function of excitation energy and pressure (l-300 Torr) of nitrogen as a foreign gas. It is shown that the yield varies greatly as the excitation energy is varied from S0-+S2 to So-&, indicating that benzaldehyde excited into S, decays by a non-radiative process which is different from that taken by the molecule excited into S2.
