✦ Synopsis

The zero-phonon line shapes of dye-surface systems which are distinctly non-Lorentzian are reported. The line shape for persistent spectral holes burnt into the Q,(O, 0) absorption band of octaethylporphyrin adsorbed on y-alumina can be well approximated by a sum of two Lorentzians with the same center frequency and with widths differing by an order of magnitude (500 MHz and 5 GHz at 2.0 K). The temperature dependence of the widths of the Lorentzians was found to be linear. The results are discussed in the light of recent theoretical models.
