Much attention has been given in recent years to the kinetics of ethyl alcohol metabolism [I, 2,3] and it has become generally accepted that they are better described by the Michaelis-Menten equation than by the zero order decline described by Widmark [4]. Whilst the application of Michaelis-Menten kinetics is of considerable theoretical interest, I believe that, with a few exceptions [5], it is of little practical use in case work as, for example, when one is asked to give an opinion on a "Hip Flask" defence to a prosecution under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1972 (as amended).
