✦ Synopsis

A method of solution for the non-linear acoustic equations of an inviscid fluid in a duct with varying cross-section is given, which brings into evidence the following aspects of the problem: (i) the influence of the cross-section variation with respect to the wavelength; (ii) the influence of the non-linear terms, the order of which is characterized by the acoustic Mach number; (iii) the influence of the relative variation of the cross-section over a wavelength.

The velocity potential is obtained as a power series in the different parameters. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to the solution of successive Neumann problems, the compatibility conditions of which give the x-propagation equations.

A second-order uniformly valid expansion is obtained by using the method of multiple scales for the 'non-linear wave propagation in a circular duct whose walls are lined with a non-linear acoustic material. The acoustic material is characterized by an empirical, non-linear impedance in which the ins
