✦ Synopsis

A search for linear polarization showing the effect of Faraday rotation has been made at 80 MHz in type III solar radio bursts. A novel autocorrelation technique was employed. The results were entirely negative, contrary to what was expected on the ground of earlier, less sophisticated experiments. However, there are convincing theoretical reasons why no linear polarization should be expected.

Seventy-six type 1II solar radio bursts or burst groups occurring over 41 days in the period November 1968 to July 1971 were studied with high time and spatial resolution at 169 MHz and high time and spectral resolution between 160 and 320 MHz. The paper describes the polarization characteristics of decametric type III solar radio bursts at two closely spaced frequencies, 34.993 and 34.997 MHz. From the simultaneous orientation angle measurements at these two frequencies, it is concluded that the total Faraday rotation suffered by type Ill

This study of type IIIb-III events strongly supports their interpretation as fundamental-harmonic burst pairs. Type IIIb chains and the related type III bursts drift from 12.5 to 6.25 MHz and from 25.0 to 12.5 MHz, respectively, during similar time intervals of 11.1 and 11.0 s, on the average. This
