✦ Synopsis

The asymptotic properties of the gravity modes of solar models with a mixed core have been investigated. In this model, the Brunt-Vaiss~tl~ frequency has a strong enhancement in the region of variable chemical composition at the boundary of the mixed core, giving rise to a non-equidistant spectrum of gravity modes periods. An asymptotic expression for the periods is derived, which relates the main feature of the departure from period equidistance to the stratification of the model. Qualitative agreement with the numerical periods of the model is obtained.

## Abstract We investigate how the frequencies of gravity modes depend on the detailed properties of the chemical composition gradient that develops near the core of main‐sequence stars and, therefore, on the transport processes that are able to modify the __ΞΌ__ profile in the central regions. The free vibration of spheres composed of inviscid compressible liquid cores surrounded by spherical layers of linear elastic, homogeneous and isotropic materials are studied using three-dimensional elasticity equations. The exact three-dimensional equations are "rst derived for an N-layered sphere
