✦ Synopsis

A simple non-dispersive atomic-fluorescence spectrometer is described for the assay of mercury in solution at the ~g I-' level; it has also been applied to fish samples at the mg kg-' level. After destruction of the fish sample, the mercury is wcluccd by tin(If) chloride and released from solution by a stream of argon which crwxes the beam of ;I mercury I:lmp. The fluoresccncc signnl is detected directly by 3 solar-blind phototube without the need for monochromators or filters. One analysis wquiws less than 40 min. The results correlate well with those f'rom atomic-absorption spcctrometry rend ncutronactivation analysis. Many publications [ 1, '21 deal with mercury pollutiorl problems and several analytical methods *are availalk for this metal, e.g.: atomicabsorption spectrometry (a-as.) [ 3-61, neutron-activation analysis (n.a.a.) ['il. u-v. spectrometry [S] and atomic-fluorescence sl>cctromctry(a.f.s.) [9-.13]

* For the analysis of traces of a few t?lt?ments. a.f.s. is regarded as being more sensitive than a.a.s.
