Acetylcholinesterase is released within the substantia nigra from the soma/dendrites of nigrostriatal neurons. Previous work suggests that this phenomenon is independent of cholinergic systems, but rather serves to modulate the sensitivity of dopamine-containing nigrostriatal cells to synaptic event
