โœฆ Synopsis

The formation of nitric oxide dimers in a nitrogen matrix at 24.5 and 25.2 K was monitored by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the results are interpreted by a numerical simulation. The diffusion coefficient is fitted by D=Doexp( -E/kT), with Do= 90 cm's_' and E= 716 cm-'. The dissociation coef%zient, K,= 2.2 x 1 0L9 molecule cmm3, does not change between 24 and 32 K. A C, rotation of a NO, N,, N2 cluster is proposed as the most probable elementary step for diffusion. The cis-and trans-(N0)1 band intensities are evaluated relative to the monomer.
