โœฆ Synopsis


A novel method of removing coal nitrogen as N, during pyrolysis has been studied with a fluidized bed reactor under atmospheric pressure. When Loy Yang brown coal with iron catalysts precipitated from FeCI, solution is pyrolysed in He at 900ยฐC 5&60% of the coal nitrogen is converted to N,, whereas the conversion to N, is ~3% without iron. The retention of coal nitrogen in both the tar and the char is considerably lower with iron catalysts. A catalyst loading of a few per cent is optimum, and the use of H, as a fluidizing gas is unnecessary. The precipitated iron is reduced completely at 900ยฐC and is present as ultrafine particles (20-50 nm); this finely dispersed, reduced iron appears to be responsible for the efficient nitrogen removal. Possible mechanisms are discussed in terms of secondary decomposition reactions of volatile nitrogen and solid-phase reactions of char nitrogen.
