states that nitrocellulose for use in the manufacture of artificial leather should have a nitrogen content between II. 5 per cent. and 13 per cent., with an average of I2 per cent. Its ash content should not exceed 0.4 per cent. The nitrocellulose is applied to the cloth base as a solution. The chief solvents used are ethyl acetate and acetone oil which is a mixture of methylethy!ketone with smaller amounts of acetone and related compounds. The solvent is usually diluted with either benzene from coal tar or benzine from petroleum. The amount of actual solvent in a solution rarely exceeds 3 Β° per cent. and may be as low as Io per cent.
