✦ Synopsis

From the example of a pilot operation in a brewery, it is demonstrated that electrodialysis is a reasonable process for removing nitrate from wellwater, The initial salt content of the raw water was 600 ppm total dissolved solids including 50 ppm nitrate and the total hardness was about 8 meq/1 . Measurements indicate that after treatment the desired product water quality, i .e 10 ppm nitrate and a residual hardness of about 2 .5 meq/l, was achieved.

The plant had a capacity of 24 m 3 /d and was operated mainly at a water recovery rate of 80% .

The costs for nitrate removal in an industrial plant were estimated to be 0 .75-1 .00 DM/mg product water, based on a plant capacity of 100 m 3/d. *Paper presented at the 5th Symposium on Synthetic Membranes in Science and Industry, Tubingen, F .R .G., September 2-5,1986.
