✦ Synopsis
The reaction of (q5-C,H5)2NbC12 with P4S10 in an alcohol ROH affords two types of compounds: (i) paramagnetic niobium(W) complexes formulated as [(q5-C,Hs)2Nb [&P(OR),] ] 'PF;;. The e.s.r. spectra correspond to the interaction of the unpaired electron with the 93Nb and 31P nuclei. They show a signijican t delocalization over the phosphorus and indicate the unpaired electron lies in the d,a _,a orbital; (ii) diamagnetic niobium(V) complexes [($-C5HJ2NbS2 [SP(S)(OR ), ] ] con raining a Nb& ring, for which 'H, 13C and 3'P n.m.r. data are given.
