The thought of leaving her Alabama home and the people she loved caused Nina Malone's heart to weep. She had tried to restore the good in her life after the war, but it simply wasn't meant to be. Agreeing to her brother's plan, she bravely made the journey to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota to meet the man who would soon become her husband.
Jack Winthrop had a vision of what his life should be and a wife really wasn't part of that vision. All he really wanted was to run his tea shop and make it popular and profitable. His bossy mother had upset his apple cart by engaging the services of the proprietor of a mail-order bride agency. It made no difference to him that Mrs. Ella Milton was rumored to be the best matchmaker in Ottertail County.
Resigned to his fate, Jack goes with to meet the woman who would become his wife. When he sees her for the first time he's shocked that she's so beautiful and decides that possibly a marriage to her might not be the worst that could happen. Though she seems shy and withdrawn, he hopes she'll come out of her shell and show him a sweet personality he's sure is hiding inside.
