At first he thought of himself as an “innocent bystander,” the poor guy who catches the slug the law was throwing at crime, or vice versa. Only, Arnold Bayless caught more than a slug and a free ambulance ride. Instead, he got a quick bump on the wig and came to with a murder rap. Then they really began to shove him around; interested parties kidnaped him from the police, making the rap solid. Nolly’s friends kept rescuing him, but the pressure kept mounting—until Nolly saw he'd been promoted to the “fall guy” class—and the next label could be “dead man.” He’d better do something! And so, with gunflame lighting his trail, Nolly began stalking the city’s rat-runs, in a grim quest for the “pal” who was trying to buy him an electric chair. Copyright, 1948, by Edward S. Aarons.
