Un hombre de negocios de Portland ha sido asesinado a tiros en la bañera de su casa. A la hora de investigar el crimen, la detective de Homicidios Catherine Hobbes cuenta con dos pistas: algunos cabellos rubios de mujer y el hecho de que la víctima fuera primo de un importante mafioso de Los Ángeles. Para complicar aún más las cosas, Hobbes se ve obligada a colaborar en el caso con Joe Pitt, un investigador privado tan mujeriego y arrogante como atractivo.
