A synthetic procedure has been developed which affords a new series of six coordinate nickel(II) complexes distinguished by a bicyclic ligand framework which encapsulates the metal ion and imposes a trigonal prismatic (TP) or near TP stereochemistry.

Electronic, infrared spectra and magnetic moments are discussed.
