CURRENT TOPICS.

I I I respectively--have lately reorganized their finances by means of a drastic reduction of capital. Large hydro-electric works are about to be erected at Laroquebrou (Cantal) for the production of sodium nitrate in the electric furnace. The motive power will be furnished by means of a dam to be built across the C~re, causing a water-fall 488 feet high. The cost of this enterprise is estimated at £8oo,ooo. Another works for the manufacture of artificial nitrates is in contemplation at Bouvillard, near Aiguebelle (Savoie), with power derived from the Arc at La Chambre. The manufacture of electrodes is actively carried on in the works of the Electrode company situated at Venissieux, on the outskirts of Lyons, whose output exceeded 5ooo tons in 1913 . Up to the present time no nitrides have been produced by the Soci6t6 G~nfrale des Nitrures at its works at St. Jean de Maurienne. Arrangements are said to have been made with a Norwegian concern with works at Arendal (25,ooo horse-power) for the production of nitrides on account of the French company for importation into France, this move being explained as necessitated by the lack of sufficient power m the St. Jean de Maurienne works. Another company is at present engaged in perfecting a rival process, the invention of Coutagne.
