โฆ Synopsis
security gateways and multifunction firewalls for branch offices. But this kind of investment now requires a higher level of justification with a strong business case.
Where that justification doesn't exist, firms will opt for best-of-breed solutions, often supplied through low-cost delivery models. Many companies are also turning to open-source tools that are implemented using internal resources rather than external suppliers.
Although a certain amount of retrenching is going on, Gartner has noted an increase in spending on security systems tied to new business initiatives, including Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) projects. Indeed, IAM came out as the top priority for a fifth of organisations surveyed in Gartner's 2010 CIO Survey. For 40% of firms, the top five priorities included intrusion prevention systems, patch management, DLP, antivirus and IAM.
Trends in security spending are not consistent across all industries, according to Gartner. High-profile organisations and those in heavily regulated industries -such as banking and finance and professional services -tend to spend more and the money goes on risk mitigation.
